February 8th MOPS Meeting

Wedding bells were ringing Friday at our meeting!  Well....at least in our heads!

Friday was all about remembering our weddings and sharing the memories with friends.  The meeting opened up with a blessing and a wonderful breakfast provided by the orange table.

Announcements followed with Cori reminding everyone this is the last day to get the coconut scrub or bath salt.

Melissa reminded everyone the black t-shirts are still for sale for $10 for those interested.

Leah was next letting everyone know of members who are currently pregnant and reminding everyone to please sign up to deliver meals to the new mommies and their family.  An e-mail reminder will go out    when the time arrives!

Lauran let us know that Christ United Methodist Church is having their Vacation Bible School from June 24th - 28th, so sign your kiddos up and don't forget to volunteer!  You can check out Facebook to sign up.
Kelly was next with the next social event for the kids.  It will be a skating event held at the Dairy Ashford Roller Rink this coming Friday, February 15th from 10am til noon. www.skatedairyashford.com

This summer we are hoping to send one young mom to camp from Young Lives.  Please search your house for gently used "cute" items that you would be willing to part with to be auctioned off Friday, February 27th at 7pm at Shelli LeBret's house.  Please have your auction items in by the February 22nd meeting.  Feel free to invite your friends to the event who might want to purchase awesome auction items.  Kelly brought examples from her house:  a gently used purse, a pancake maker that had never been used, Shellie brought up a pair of shoes that have never been worn that were still in the box.

After the announcements we looked through everyones wedding photo albums and listened to their wonderful memories.

After looking through the albums, Lauran went through all of the e-mails that she had received from our loving husbands.  All e-mails were anonymous, so we all listened in wondering which reponse our husbands had sent. The meeting closed with prayers and praises from Lauran.

Our next meeting will be Friday, February 22nd with a breakfast from the yellow table.

January 11th Meeting

Welcome back MOPPERS! It was so great to see everyone on Friday! Many thanks to our always marvelous Mentor Moms for the fabulous breakfast. You guys take the best care of us!

Please join us in the warmest of welcome to our new members:

Aleini Lacombe (Red Table)
Ashley Lynn (Orange Table)
Pamela Robinson (Orange Table)
Chasity Henderson (Yellow Table)
Chrisanna Mooney (Blue Table)
And...returning member Alison Makhlouf (Blue Table)

Also, help me to welcome our newest Mentor Mom, Jennifer Wells!

Thank you to Kelly Otero for organizing the Chuck E. Cheese playdate on the 14th and the 15th. Our mommy social this month is on Thursday, January 24th at The Glazery on Dulles and Cartwright. We will meet at 7pm. If you plan to attend, please contact Kelly (theoteros@mac.com). There is no need to pay in advance; you will simply pay for whatever piece you choose to paint. Feel free to bring an appetizer or sweet to share! (www.theglazery.com)

Our next meeting on the 25th will feature another fun craft that will involve a few items from home. Keep an eye out for an email from Cori Atkins with further instructions.

Many thanks to all who participated in the diaper drive during the meeting. Thanks to Shelli LeBret and Meredith Canny for overseeing the delivery of the diapers to the next Young Lives meeting on the 24th.

Lauran Helms reminded us that it is time to start gearing up for VBS! Mark your calendars for June 24th - June 28th. The website should be up and running by the next meeting so volunteers can sign up. If you and your children have never participated in VBS at CUMC, trust me, you are not going to want to miss out on all the fun!!!

Kim Garnett reminded us that our MOPS Favorite Things meeting is coming up on March 22nd. Start thinking of some of your "favorite things" to share with the group. Your favorite thing can be anything (food, apps, workouts, underwear, mommy gadgets, household items, etc). Be on the lookout for more info from Kim.

Get out your wedding dresses!  For our Valentine’s meeting on February 8th, everyone is encouraged to wear your wedding dress, a favorite/awful bridesmaid dress, your veil, etc.  If your dress doesn’t fit exactly as it did on the day, who cares???  We’re all among friends and it’s all in the name of good fun!  Email your wedding stories to Lauran Helms (lauranhelms@gmail.com).  Email your funniest wedding pic to Kim Garnett (khgarnett@gmail.com).  Bring your wedding albums to that meeting and we will all swap and reminisce!

Remember to bring any unwanted/outgrown baby/kid/mommy items to meetings and put them on the piano.  Anything not claimed will go to Young Lives.

Black MOPS t-shirts are still for sale for $10.

If you have a home-based business, remember that we have a table set up for you to use during meetings to let our members know about your business.

The rest of the meeting was spent getting to know one another with ice breakers.

Lauran Helms closed us out with an awesome devotional on resolutions.  She read to us from Psalm 90 on how we cannot keep our sins a secret from God.  She also read to us from James 4: 13-15 which cautions us about boasting about the future.  Finally, she encouraged us to make Philippians 3:3-10, which encourages us to deepen our relationship with Christ, our motto for the year!

Next meeting is January 25th.  Red Table is up for breakfast.  Prayers for everyone getting healthy and staying healthy with everything going around. See you then!

This Thursday, November 15th is the Young Lives Thanksgiving dinner.  If you would like to help, please contact Shelli LeBret (srlebret@gmail.com).

Young Lives still needs drivers to get the girls to and from the meetings.  If you can possibly help with this important ministry, please contact Kathy Aldredge with Young Lives (kaldredge@hotmail.com).  There will especially be a need for drivers to and from the December 13th meeting.

Shelli will have a bag at every meeting for donations to Young Lives.  Please start bringing beauty items to donate for the "beauty bags" that we will make for the girls in December.

Shelli also reminded us that East Ft. Bend Human Needs Ministry collects birthday supplies for the "birthday packs" they supply to families in need.  If you have excess plates, napkins, cups, etc from your children's birthdays, please consider donating them to this worthy cause.  There is a bin across from the kitchen at CUMC that is designated for EFBHNM.

Kathleen Randall invited everyone to a cookie exchange that will be held at CUMC on Sunday, December 16th at 5pm.  Everyone will bring 3 dozen cookies for sharing (wrapped by the dozen) and a container to take some cookies home. Some will be eaten, some will be shared, and some will be donated.  Donated cookies will benefit Holley Elementary, Family Promise Day Center, Fort Bend County Women's Center, and local fire/police stations.  For additional info, contact Kathleen (kltx@hotmail.com).

Erin Reed shared with us that her husband and his colleagues are all enjoying a newly acquired Keurig machine during their deployment in Kabul, Afghanistan.  We talked about gathering some of the Keurig pods in various flavors to donate to these wonderful soldiers.  If you would like to participate, please bring some pods to the next meeting.

Stasi McAteer absolutely rocked the devotional today!!!! She read us an incredibly moving selection from Ann Voskamp to which we could all relate.  For more information on Ann Voskamp, visit www.onethousandgifts.com or www.aholyexperience.com.  Well done, Stasi!!!!

The rest of the meeting was spent chatting over "popcorn" questions and assessing our personalities using the Meyer-Briggs assessment.  To analyze your results, visit http://www.myersbriggs.org/my-mbti-personality-type/mbti-basics/the-16-mbti-types.asp.

Fabulous meeting everyone.  Next meeting is November 16th and the Blue table is on tap for breakfast.

October 19th Meeting Recap

Constance was back this week to open with a prayer before we feasted on the delicious breakfast provided by the Yellow Table.  Fellowship with good friends and good food.....who could ask for more!!!

Announcements followed:

We are still collecting blankets and Good Night Moon books for Military Moms and newborn babies!  This is a great to support these mommies by bringing these items up to CUMC by November 8th.

The PJ Party at Kelly Otero's house was a hit!  PJ's, drinks, pizza, and a chocolate fountain sounds like a recipe for success!
"Thirty-one" brochures were looked at during the PJ party and were also passed around the meeting on Friday.
If you are interested, you can contact Jaclyn Hanks at 832-539-1595 or log on to:

**Remember MOPS receives proceeds from these purchases!!

On November 2nd, CUMC will host a concert by Josh Wilson at 7:30 pm.  The concert is free so come on out and enjoy great music.

Operation Christmas Child is underway.  You will need to pick a child (age & gender), purchase a container, and fill it with goodies for that special child.  These containers will be sent to 3rd world countries, so non-perishable items such as hair brushes, pens, beauty supplies, and crafts will work great.  These items need to be turned in by the next meeting.  For more info, go to:

http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/occ/

Constance passed around "thank you" cards that MOPS had received for sending gift cards to  a mom of twins as well as a single mother who had adopted a child who is having medical issues.  Both mothers were extremely thankful and gracious for the gift cards.  The cards were very sweet and you could tell how much it really meant to them.

The Mentor Moms supper will be held on Tuesday, October 23rd at 6:30 at Nancy Burford's home at 207 Laurel Springs Sugar Land, 77478.

Kathie Kelly attended a YL Meeting last Thursday night and told of what an awesome time she had.  She was a driver and the young mom she drove around went on and on about how much fun she had at the meeting.  Caitlin McNamee told of an 8th grade mom who had won a stroller and a huge bag of goodies which helped her out tremendously!!  She also told Caitlin how much fun she had at the meeting.

Leah Hammonds told us detrimental news of a 10 year old boy named James Evans who was killed in a tragic accident last weekend at a weekend outing.  His funeral was held at CUMC last Thursday, October 18th.  Meals are being coordinated to send to his family.  Please keep James' family and friends in your prayers.

Renata Smith let us know she will be participating in a fundraiser for the Brent Event Foundation which benefits young adult cancer patients.  Brent was a classmate of Renata's so she does a lot to support the foundation! The event was at Sugar Land Memorial Park on Saturday, Oct 20th and included a run, a BBQ lunch, and fun for kids.  Hopefully Renata will give us an update at our next meeting!  To find out more about the Brent Event Foundation go to www.brentevent.org

Don't forget about the pumpkin patch at St. Catherine's in Sienna.  The hours are 10 to 7 Monday thru Saturday and 10 to 6 on Sunday.  I took my kids and got some great pictures and an awesome pumpkin!  It's very cute!!

Melissa Treadway and Shelli LeBret were both unable to attend the meeting due to sick kiddos so we look forward to catching up with them at the next meeting.  We will keep them in our prayers for a quick recovery!

Lauran Helms went next with the "Prayers and Praises" of the group so that the event speaker Jeanne Hensley could have the open floor for her presentation.

Lauran was followed by Jeanne Hensley, who came out to speak from the Houston Center for Christian Counseling.  Her presentation was titled "Blessing Kids by Seeing Them as God Does."
Her presentation was very educating and enlightening and covered a variety of strengths and characteristics that your child can have and went over how you as the parent should work with them to optimize their potential in these areas.  She gave an example or a trait and then went on to say what this trait can influence a child to become.  For example....
An aggressive child can become persuasive.  This type of personality needs to encouraged to be kind and to be spoken to the truth in love.  Eph 4:15 was quoted scripture for reading for this trait.
Please see Lana Mistretta if you would like a full copy of her presentation.  I have a couple of extra copies.

Jeanne's presentation was filled with excellent questions and discussion from inquisitive moms.  We had about 20 minutes at the end to fellowship with friends before we all headed out at noon.  It was another wonderful time and successful meeting!!!

See you on Friday, November 9th for our next meeting.  Come hungry because I am sure the Green Table will bring a feast!!

Next week will have a dollar auction to raise money for our group.  Tickets will be $1/ticket, 7 tickets for $5, or 15 tickets for $10.  All proceeds from the dollar auctions benefit our general MOPS budget.  The coin bucket that is passed around every meeting will benefit our Missions project, Young Lives.

Caitlin McNamee had our rapt attention as she told us the incredible story about Ryan's birth at home!  Huge praises for his safe delivery!!!

Kelly Otero kept us up to date on our social events for the rest of September and October:

*The Couples Social is Friday, September 28th from 6:30-8:30pm (childcare from 6:15pm-8:15pm).  Friday was the last day to pay, but if you paid and have changed your mind, Wednesday is the absolute last day to let Kelly know so she can pull your payment (theoteros@mac.com).

*We're going to Dewberry Farms on October 10th!  The plan is to meet at Dewberry Farms at 10am.  Liz Brown and Kathie Kelly will lead a caravan from CUMC at 9am, or you can just meet us there at 10am.  Cost is $6/person (children two and under are free).  Kelly must have payment by October 5th (make checks payable to Kelly Otero).  If you have a black MOPS shirt, wear it so we can easily recognize each other.  If you would like to purchase a t-shirt, they are for sale for $10 through Melissa Gisler. You can either pack a lunch or purchase lunch at the on-site cafeteria. www.dewberryfarm.com

*Mark your calendars for the PJ Party on October 13th!  The party will be at Kelly Otero's house and pizza, a chocolate fountain, and other assorted junk food will be provided.  Bring a bottle of wine (or your drink of choice) to share!

Melissa Treadway reminded us that if you would like to purchase an initial mug like many of the MOPS have, they are available at Latte Tots (www.latte-tots.com).

At our October 5th meeting, we will have our annual costume swap!  Bring any costumes that your children have outgrown and you can swap them with other MOPS.  MOPS who bring costumes to swap will have first dibs, after that they will be open to everyone.  Costumes for adults are welcome too!

The pumpkins are coming!!!  St. Catherine of Sienna Pumpkin Patch will begin on October 8th and run through the 31st.  The pumpkin patch is open daily from 10am-7pm (6pm on Sundays).  This is a GREAT place to take pictures and get your Halloween pumpkins!  St. Catherine's is located at 4747 Sienna Parkway inside Sienna Plantation.  www.siennachurch.org

Our wonderful Mentor Moms will host a soup dinner for us on October 23rd.  More details to come, but mark your calendars!

Ali Kefalos gave us a stirring introduction to Young Lives, our Missions project for this year.  Young Lives caters to teenage mothers in a variety of ways from material to spiritual.  We are called to help in many different ways, so there is an opportunity for everyone!  Each month, MOPS will have one opportunity to help out with this group, and everyone is asked to pick one of the volunteer opportunities throughout the year and sign up.  The volunteer opportunities range from driving a member of Young Lives to their monthly meeting, providing childcare at their meetings, providing food for the meetings, and helping to deliver "goodies" to the moms on special occasions.  Young Lives typically holds their meetings on the third Thursday of the month from 6:30pm-8:30pm at Parkway United Methodist Church on New Territory Blvd.  As your children outgrow their baby items, please consider donating them to this worthy cause.  I think many of us had our hearts touched at this meeting and would really like to get involved.  For more information about additional volunteer opportunities contact Cheslee Escobedo (chesleek@yahoo.com).  If you are feeling called to be a mentor to one of the Young Lives moms, contact Ali Kefalos (alikefalos@gmail.com).  If you missed the meeting and did not get a chance to sign up, contact Shelli LeBret (srlebret@gmail.com).

One of our projects is that we will be making "I Feel Pretty" bags for the moms at Young Lives in November and delivering them to the moms in December.  Be on the lookout in the next couple months for deals on beauty items to donate for these bags.

We all signed the "Member Covenant" on Friday confirming our commitment to our group.  If you were unable to attend on Friday, please see Constance for a covenant.

Kim Garnett led us in some great ice-breaking activities.  It was great to get to know everyone!

Lauran Helms closed us out with prayers and praises at the end of the meeting.

Our next meeting is October 5th.  Orange table will provide breakfast.  See you then!

Welcome Back MOPS!!!!

It is so good to be back!  The lovely CUMC MOPS had their first meeting of the semester today, and as usual, laughter, chatter, prayer, and food were the order of the day!

Our fearless new coordinator, Constance Ritter, got us started by reminding us why we come to MOPS.  While having fun is a huge part of MOPS, we are an organization rooted in faith and we should always remember that the purpose of MOPS is to "encourage, equip and develop every Mother of a Preschooler to realize her potential as a woman, mother and leader in the name of Jesus Christ."

This year we will introduce a "Member Covenant" that each member will need to read and sign.  We are a vibrant group with a waiting list of mommies who would like to join, so attendance must be a priority for the group.  Obviously, absences due to illness (yours or your children), emergency, family crisis, etc are absolutely excusable.  However, in the event of an absence, communication with your table's Discussion Group Leader (DGL) is essential.  After two uncommunicated absences, we will be forced to give your spot to one of the mommies on our waiting list.

CUMCSL will offer a FREE workshop about introducing issues of sexual morality with your children.  The workshop will be on Sunday, September 16th from 4-6 in rooms 210/211.  Registration is required and childcare is limited so if you are interested, sign up soon!

http://www.cumcsl.org/details/AnnounceDetails.aspx?AnnounceId=3977

Announcements from Steering Members:

Melissa Gisler gave us a run down of how our outreach budget was used last year to benefit our community.

Leah Hammonds appealed to the group to sign up for a Care Team meal at least once a semester (more if you are able--we have LOTS of babies this year!)

Kathleen Randall and Leah Hammonds are heading up a bible study on off MOPS Fridays.  They will start on October 12th and the first one is on patience.  If you are interested, contact Kathleen (kltx@hotmail.com) to sign up.  They are able to offer limited childcare and if more people sign up than they can accomodate, a drawing will be done to keep things fair.  There is no limit on how many people they can have in the study, so if childcare is not an issue for you, feel free to sign up!

Kelly Otero announced the social outings for September:

Thursday, September 13th at 6:50pm: Mom's Night at the Movies!  We will see Hope Springs at the Star Cinema Grill on Hwy 6 in Missouri City.

Monday, September 17th from 9-11am: Playdate at the Sugar Creek Playscape.  Free admission!

Friday, September 28th from 6:30-8:30pm: MOPS Couples Night.  Bring your husband so we can all get to know each other! Dinner will be catered at CUMCSL and childcare will be provided.  $30 per couple.

Shelli LeBret introduced our new Missions project: Young Lives, a division of Young Life that services pregnant teenage mothers.  Stay tuned, we will have a speaker from Young Lives with us at our next meeting on September 21st.

Meredith Canny introduced our coin can that will be passed around at all meetings.  Proceeds from the coin can will be donated as a part our our outreach ministry.  She also introduced the 9:30am drawing that will be done at each meeting.  If you are present before 9:30am, you get to put your name in for a chance at some fabulous MOPS prizes!

Melissa Treadway explained how we can change any of our membership information at https://cumciahtx.infellowship.com

Committees were announced and committee members met briefly to discuss responsibilities for the year.

The rest of the meeting was spent getting reacquainted with old friends and meeting our fabulous new MOPS and Mentor Moms.  We really have a great group this year!

The rock star award goes to Breanne Ward who STILL CAME to the meeting today even though her baby is scheduled to arrive via C-section this evening!!!  Talk about commitment!  Breanne, you and your family are definitely in our prayers today and we can't wait to see your beautiful new addition!

Lauran Helms closed our meeting with a reflection on Matthew 9: 1-5 when Jesus forgives and heals a paralyzed man.  She gave us a poignant reminder that what we get out of MOPS is contingent upon the commitment that we put into it.  Great advice!

And finally, meet your Steering Committee!

Back Row: Melissa Treadway (Membership), Leah Hammonds (Care Team), Meredith Canny (Fundraising), Kathie Kelly (Publicity), Lauran Helms (Prayer), Melissa Gisler (Finance), Shelli LeBret (Missions), Cori Atkins (MOPS Crafts), Kim Garnett (Hospitality)
Front Row: Kelly Otero (Social), Liz Brown (Co-Coordinator), Erin Reed (MOPPETS Crafts), Constance Ritter (Coordinator)

It's going to be a great year!  See you September 21st!

Meeting Recap 19 Nov

I'm so glad we had such a great turn-out for our meeting on Friday. The Moms Panel is always really helpful and this year was no exception. Buckle up ladies, this is going to be a long post.

. . .

Shannon Schlachter, Stacy Johnson and Christina Moreland were our panelists this year. Between the three of them, they have over 100 years of parenting experience (that may be an exaggeration).

Two words of wisdom from our esteemed panel were thus:

1. Never forget an anniversary and,
2. Let your children fail.

As the wife of someone who HAS forgotten an anniversary, I think this is very true. Even if there's no celebration, do SOMETHING. If you get a chance, ask Addie Delahoussaye (admit it, you're impressed that I know how to spell her last name) what she and her husband do for their anniversary every year. It's pretty cool.

As for the second piece of advice - I know this is hard. I don't want my kid to ever struggle with anything. I want her to be good at writing and reading and eating with a fork. I want her to be GOOD at everything, and I don't want her to ever feel the frustration of not getting something right the first time. But I know that's just silly. As someone who didn't have any major struggles with school, or making friends (or eating with a fork), I found myself lost when I couldn't find a job and the person with whom I spent most of my time pooped standing up in the corner.

Needless to say, I didn't handle it well.

But I've learned perseverance, patience, and another word that starts with P that I can't think of right now. It's important to learn how to fail, and even more important to learn how to pick yourself up after.

. . .

One of the first things we talked about was when we should stop taking responsibility for everything our kids need to take to school. Everyone agreed that teachers really help parents make that decision. Some 1st grade teachers require students to hand in their folders themselves. We can help ease that transition by handing folders to our kids, who then will hand it to teachers. It was also mentioned that by second grade, kids are given a lot more responsibility. Encourage them to take responsibility for their homework. They're told that they're in charge or getting forms signed, homework finished, etc, so hold them to the teacher's standards.

. . .

Scheduling was another topic that was brought up. How many activities are too many? In addition, how do you stay organized?

Christina said that in first grade, her kids get to pick 1 activity. In second grade, they get two. Shannon suggested that having her husband coach her son's baseball team helps them keep the number of practices down. She also insisted that you only volunteer for things that involve your kids. Christina mentioned that carpooling makes everything easier.
I think this is very dependent on your family. We only have one kid, so Claire could go to more activities than a family with 16 kids. It also depends on the timing of the activity. If soccer practice starts at 6, but it's important that your family sits down to eat together every night, soccer might not be the best sport for your family.
Look at the start times of all the things your kids want to do. Don't be afraid to tell them no. And don't hesitate to talk to coaches if they're insistent on practicing 5 times a week. These kids aren't in the majors. They're just having a good time.
That being said, I think extra-curricular activities are SO important for kids. Growing up, we were expected to do SOMETHING after school. It almost didn't matter what it was. You know, as long as it wasn't taking Dealing Drugs 101 or pole dancing lessons or something.

. . .

Having a three-year old is hard enough. Dealing with one who says "No" to everything is cause for a raise. So how do you handle a three year-old who refuses to agree with anything?
My new favorite quote? "God grant me the peace to deal with my blessings." Listen, I'm the first to tell you that kids kinda suck. They want things, SO BAD, but they can't articulate what they want. Everything is unfair and grounds for tears. Sometimes, you just can't convince them that playing with knives is unsafe. This is, obviously, a time where it's NOT a good time to "Let them fail" because you might end up with "Let them learn how it feels to get stitches."

However, if you're faced with a non-life threatening situation, have fun with it.
I refuse to take my kid too seriously. She's three. She doesn't know what she's talking about. Kids have short memories (thank goodness), and I can usually get Claire out of a tantrum by just changing the subject. Sure, she's confused for a second, but now she sees how I feel when I hear her talk about how how much milk she should be allowed to have now that she's awake and don't you think it's a great idea to give her an apple and wouldn't it be so much fun to go to the Stomping Grounds since she had four noodles because she could totally get another noodle if she puts her shoes in the shoe basket and did you hear about the time that Jane-Jane SQUIRREL.

I've heard that God gives us the kids we need to have. I think I got hosed since I'm convinced God gave me the kid JR's supposed to have and I'm the one dealing with it most of the time, but whatever. The point of all that is to have fun with your kids. Soon they're not going to want anything to do with you. Enjoy them now.

In related news, someone asked what to do with time-outs don't work. Claire was in time-out for most of last year. But, I used to tell her she was allowed out of Time-Out when she could figure out how to do whatever it was that she was supposed to do. There wasn't a set time for this. In fact, one day she sat in Time-Out for 4 (that's FOUR) hours until she could figure out how to say she was sorry for hitting me. I read an entire book while she was sitting in the corner. To say it was ridiculous is a massive understatement. She hated it, I hated it, but she finally said she was sorry.

For older kids, it was suggested to ask them what's important for them to lose. If they're favorite thing is to play outside, that's the punishment. No playing outside if they get in trouble. Take away TV, desert, electronics. Just remember that you have to be the one to enforce it. So, if the only way you can cook dinner without "help" is if the kids watch Phineas and Ferb for half an hour, think long and hard about using television as a punishment.

. . .

So how do you keep your kids from getting frustrated with they don't get something right the first time?

A lot of people suggested extra work, after homework. Make it a game, and encourage kids to come up with things they can do to improve. They'll be more receptive if they think the extra practice is their idea. I've found the same works for husbands.

Most importantly, be an advocate for your kids. If there's a problem with a teacher, talk to him or her. However, don't assume your kid is right. Listen to their teacher and work together to find a solution.

. . .

A few of the books mentioned during the meeting were:

The 5 Love Languages and

The Five Love Languages of Children by Gary Chapman

Strength Finder by Tom Rath

. . .

I hope everyone got as much out of the panel as I did. Did I miss anything? Let me know in the comments!

See you Friday!

Meeting Recap 5 Nov

Hey everyone!

I think we had a great meeting on Friday. I know we only got to two of the Convention Share Sessions, but I'm planning on putting the notes from all three on the Nesting site so everyone can have them available.

Here's what we did Friday:

Kathleen reminded everyone about the Thanksgiving Food Drive to be held at our next meeting, November 19. Don't forget the things EFBHNM needs the most -
Canned meat
juice
jelly
crackers
mac & cheese
flour
rice
corn meal
toddler sized diapers
toilet paper
sample size toiletries

Also, we're going to be going out to EFBHNM on November 22 to hand out Thanksgiving food. I went last year and it's a lot of fun. Childcare is $3/child, and they need a lunch. Let Kathleen know if you're interested in coming and didn't get a chance to sign up. We're meeting at the church at 9 and heading over soon after.

I've had a few requests for the recipes of the things everyone is bringing to the meetings. Post them on the Nesting site (we have a thread for recipes already), and I'll put some on the blog too.

Charlotte talked about Matthew 7.20 at the meeting too. She asked us to think about what we're praying for. Don't just pray for the big stuff, think about the small details too.

My favorite part? "Children are a gift from God. They are His reward."

We started praying for our kids last week too. Colin and Benjamin Shearer; Jackson Dias; Luke and Mackenzie Harrison; Madeline, Chloe and Mason Hill; Kendall, Hailey, Austin and Travis Merkel; Hailey and Mason Nuno; Sarah Steinhaus; Austin Stump; and Aleah and Andrew Thummel.

Don't forget to send me pictures of your kids. I only have about 10 people who've sent them in. I need them asap! My email address is CoriAtkins@gmail.com if you don't know it.

Hope everyone has a great week. See you next Friday!

An interview with Addie. No really, it's real. Ok, it's not, but it could be!

The curtain opens with Addie on the phone.

Addie: And that's why nothing gets done around here. Too many dance breaks!

Cori walks in with a notebook and pen. Addie hangs up the phone.

Cori: Alright lady, tell me your secrets. How do you possibly juggle two kids, a goofball husband, writing a book, being indispensable in MOPS, and everything to do around here and still have time to look so beautiful?

Addie: Well, it's easy. I'm extremely organized. It's the only way things get done! I have a cleaning schedule, I plan my meals every week and clip coupons, everything has a place and I have a place for everything.

Cori: We can all learn from you, Addie! You're so smart!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ok, so the interview didn't exactly go like that. Are you surprised? Here's the real one:
Addie: Why do you want to interview me?! My house is a mess, I haven't washed my hair, and I'm pretty sure Lily's running around the house in a felt vest and her unmentionables. I'm not exactly the poster child for organization.
Cori: That's true. Maybe I should re-think this.
Addie: Hey!
Cori: No, I wanted to interview you because you've taken what Jennifer taught you and applied it to your own life. No household has the same demands, so you figured out what you needed help with. What was the thing you used the most from last year?
Addie: The meal chart, definitely. Lily loves to check it every afternoon to find out what we're having for dinner.
Cori: So you have to stick to the chart? What if you decide that you don't FEEL like making spaghetti again and want to order pizza, but the chart still says spaghetti?
Addie: I just have to switch it before she sees.
Cori: I can just hear you, "No Lily, you must be mistaken. Tuesday was ALWAYS pizza. It never said spaghetti. Maybe we need to work on your reading comprehension."
Addie: Something like that.
Cori: What projects did you do this year?
Addie: I did the Mood Board. Lily's going to be on the sad face today because apparently I'm not as cool or pretty or funny as Mrs. Jenny (ed note: that would be Jenny Harrison, the coolest, prettiest, funniest mom in the world, apparently) but whateves.
Cori: You don't actually say "Whateves" in conversation, do you?
Addie: Nope. Just in this pretend interview.
Cori: That's what I thought. What other projects did people at your table do? Which ones are you going to use?
Addie: I like the list of things that the kids need to do in the morning. I'm adding "Tell my mom how cool and pretty and funny she is" to it, but everything else looks good. What about you?
Cori: I'm doing the meal chart, and the mood board too. Claire has no interest in going potty on the actual potty (just behind the couch), so I'm waiting on that. And I'm using the one about when Daddy's getting back from his trip. Hey, who's doing this interview anyway?
Addie: Sorry.
Cori: It's ok. Thanks for talking with me. I'm sure we'll talk for real in a few minutes.
Addie: My pleasure.
What was your favorite organizational project from last year? And which one do you think you'll use the most from this year?
Are there any others that weren't shown at the meeting that you'll use? And, most importantly, how can I get my kid to stop pooping behind the couch?
